What to See and Do in Bogota

Start in La Candelaria—narrow streets, colorful buildings, Plaza Bolívar, where pigeons outnumber people. The Botero Museum is free and full of his signature chubby figures, plus his personal collection. The Gold Museum needs at least two hours—the craftsmanship is insane. Take the cable car or funicular up Monserrate for views over the entire city. Go early before crowds and pollution block the view. There's a church at the top if you're into that. Street art tours through the Candelaria show you murals that tell Colombia's story better than most history books. Graffiti is legal in certain zones here, which explains why it's everywhere and actually good. For food: Andrés Carne de Res in Chía (just outside the city) is an experience—massive place, live music, meat-heavy menu, locals celebrating everything. La Puerta Falsa has been serving tamales and hot chocolate since 1816. Zona G has the upscale spots if you want to drop money on tasting menus.

When to Go

Bogota's high altitude means temperatures stay consistent year-round—15°C to 20°C (60°F to 68°F)—but it rains. December to March and July to August are drier. You'll find the cheapest flights to Bogota in April, May, September, and October when the rain picks up. Just bring a jacket and an umbrella, no matter when you go.

Getting There

El Dorado International Airport sits about 30 minutes from the city centre, depending on traffic, which is always bad. TransMilenio bus system connects to the airport for cheap.. For economical flights to Bogota, compare airlines and book a few months out for better prices. So, why wait? Grab those cheap flights to Bogota, chase street art sunsets, and let Colombia's heartbeat pull you in. Your epic escape starts now—book it!
